Define the variables.

Adult Tickets=A

Student tickets =S

You know A+S=209

There were 23 more students than twice the number of adults, so....S=2A+23

Now you have a substitution problem.

Substitute S=2A+23 into A+S=209 to get A+2A+23=209, so

3A=186

Divide by 3 and you get A=62

Now plus A back into S=2A+23 for 2(62)+23 to get S=147

So, A=62 and S=147.

adult: x

student: 23 + 2x

x + (23 + 2x) = 209

3x + 23 = 209

3x = 186

x = 62

23 + 2(62) = 23 + 124 = 147

62 adult, 147 student
62 adults

147 students
